A flying start to the new season for Cam Fraser

The British GP2 Championship could not have got off to a better start for Cameron Fraser, sponsored by Fairburn Heating Solutions.  In the very first race of the season on Saturday, Cam qualified in second place, and then after battling all race, he grabbed the lead going into the final lap and held on for the victory.

Cam is pictured above after the race with Craig Carr and his trophy.

Unfortunately, after again running in 1st place in GP2 class, in the second race, Cam was hit from behind by another rider and crashed out, but overall, it was a very encouraging weekend with some great lap times.

Craig Carr, Managing Director of Fairburn Heating Solutions said “It was great to be at Silverstone to see Cam ride and a well-deserved win in the first race was everything we could have hoped for.  The bigger Fairburn stickers seem to have make a big difference!”

Is it time to review your commercial heating system?

At Fairburn Heating Solutions, Managing Director Craig Carr and his team have noticed an increase in enquiries relating to Commercial Heating Systems.  Craig commented “Many companies have realised they need to try to cut their energy usage in the face of spiralling costs.  They don’t want to waste heat and they are finding that the increased energy costs are significantly changing the lifetime cost and return on investment (ROI) assumptions made when their systems were designed and installed.

Many companies have commercial heating equipment which uses old technology and there is scope for improving it and/or introducing a more rigorous maintenance regime to maximise efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Typical venues that the Fairburn team have been invited to look at include warehouses and larger leisure facilities such as gyms, sports halls and swimming pools.  There is also a greater focus on commercial heating system design in new buildings.  Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) Systems contractors can benefit from talking to commercial heating design & installation experts when designing and building large facilities such as warehousing for the growing online fulfilment industry.  Traditionally, these kind of constructions use radiant heating, but good design can significantly reduce running costs.

One of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic has been an increase in ventilation in many buildings, which of course tends to increase the heating costs.

The experienced team of gas engineers at Fairburn have expertise in installing and maintaining a wide range of commercial heating equipment, including the use of roof-mounted destratification fans like the one shown (left) to push the warmer air back to a lower level, utilise heat generated by lighting and machinery and reduce pre-heat time.

All Fairburn projects benefit from an accepted best practice approach to the whole project including testing and handover.  Robust project management ensures high-quality work is completed on-time and within the agreed budget.  Our engineers are available to work on a 7-day basis to minimise the impact on our clients’ normal operations.

If your commercial heating system costs are too high, or suffering unplanned breakdowns, or if you are considering installing a new commercial heating solution, please give us a call on 01886 358025, email us or use the contact form on our website.

Sam is making great progress with his gas studies

We are delighted to confirm that Sam Harris,  our Process Gas Trainee has successfully completed his managed learning programme, giving him entry to obtain his Commercial ACS gas qualifications.   Sam studied hard to complete the programme and submitted a portfolio of practical work.

When he receives these next qualifications, he will be able to work unsupervised at customer’s sites.

Commenting on his achievement, Sam said “I am very proud of what I have achieved so far with my training. It has been something I wanted to do since being introduced to the industry, when I was service coordinator for Fairburn.”

“I feel that I am in a brilliant position, with the support our engineers and office team provide, to allow me to progress and excel on my journey to become a qualified Process Gas Technician.

We’re proud of you too Sam, well done!

Case study – “significant savings in production downtime”

When Tayto, the third-largest snack manufacturer in the UK had issues with setting up their batch fryers at their Corby plant and were looking for a maintenance company who could offer a new service plan they asked an external consultant for help.

The consultant recommended that they speak to Fairburn Heating Solutions and we were glad to help.

We quickly resolved the fryer issues and began working with Tayto on a Stepwise Service Programme which follows the Fairburn Asset Management Excellence Journey.   A close working relationship with the Tayto Engineering Team was developed allowing us to service, monitor, audit and review the programme which ensured delivery of tangible production time savings.

The relationships built by our engineers gave the Tayto Engineering Team confidence and helped them secure the plant time needed to conduct the process improvement trials without affecting the manufacturing schedules through better controlled downtime.

Following the success of this initial work, Fairburn are now engaged under an on-going retainer arrangement with annual reviews to support maintenance, carry out remedial work and handle occasional callouts at the Corby site.

Commenting on the initial programme of work, David Weston, Engineering manager for Tayto group said “Having a Stepwise approach to Asset Management Excellence is at the core of Tayto’s business. The service provided by Craig and the team at Fairburn Heating Solutions fits the model perfectly and has given us the time to make great changes to our process heating equipment and make significant savings in production downtime.

1,000 mile round trip to fix salmon feed dryers

When Mowi ASA, the world’s leading seafood company and largest producer of Atlantic salmon had problems with their salmon feed dryers they contacted Fairburn Heating Solutions to see if we could help.

The company had been experiencing problems with the gas burners in the driers since they were originally installed.  James Brown, one of our Senior Process Gas Technicians and Sam Harris our new process gas trainee visited the plant on the Isle of Skye to conduct a full service and fault find on the burners.  They both completed the service, identified the problem, made the necessary adjustments and gave recommendations to the on-site team.  The driers are now running in a fault-free manner.

Mowi were very pleased with the work done and have agreed to make Fairburn an annual service provider, putting their trust in our knowledge and expertise.

Commenting on the project, James said “a 1,000 mile round trip was a long way to go for the project, but the scenery when I got there more than made up.  It’s great that we were able to fix the problem and that we’ve secured more work, but my colleagues are already offering to do the job in my place.”

If you have been putting up with persistent gas burner problems, give us a call on 01886 358 025, email us at totalsolutions@fairburnhs.com or use the contact form on this website and we’ll see if we can help.

Dan is a Happy Petrol Head

When Dan Williams joined the Fairburn team in October 2014, he was already a huge car enthusiast.  After a period working alongside more senior engineers in the team to gain experience, it was clear that he would be a natural fit to deliver our support to the Honda factory in Swindon.

Honda was the first really big client for Fairburn Heating Solutions, back in 2005 and helped establish the business.  It was therefore a sad day when on 30th July this year the last car rolled off the production line.  At its peak, the factory made 680 cars per day, with a total output of 3.7 million vehicles since it opened in 1985, with the best known car, the Civic exported across Europe.

Fortunately for Dan, this isn’t the end of his automotive experience with Fairburn.  He now makes regular trips to the Rolls Royce plant at Goodwood, on the outskirts of Chichester in West Sussex.

Dan commented “It’s great to be able to combine my work with my passion for all things automotive and feel like I’m playing my small part in keeping car manufacturing alive in the UK.”

Team pulls together to slash downtime by 87%

When the Roasting Company, the largest family-owned processor of Peanuts and Tree nuts in the UK suffered a factory fire at their manufacturing facility near Sleaford in Lincolnshire they were quoted a lead time for delivery of replacement equipment of at least 16 weeks.

Fortunately, they decided to call Fairburn and we were able to offer them a complete refurbish as an alternative, with a target of 2 weeks to full recommissioning.

This photo shows some of the clean and shiny refurbished equipment after our engineers had worked their magic.

The whole team pulled together to get the work done, and James (pictured above) completed the commissioning work in time to hit the deadlines.

As Sean, one of our Senior Process Gas Technicians said “we pulled out all the stops, but it’s what we do for all our clients.  Process Heating should never be the cause of downtime”

Craig Carr, Managing Director of Fairburn Heating Solutions said “The Roasting Company were facing a situation which could have caused significant disruption and long-term damage to their business.  Fortunately, by pulling together as a team, we were able to complete the refurbishment and get them back to full manufacturing capacity 14 weeks earlier than they had feared.  They were very grateful to all our engineers for their efforts on the project.”

Another good weekend for AH Performance

Last weekend saw the Ducati Performance TriOptions Cup move on to Donnington Park for races 5 and 6 of the 16 race 2021 championship.  The AH Performance team that we sponsor had another good weekend with Michael Tustin (pictured above) scoring 12 points across the two races, thanks to a 9th place in the first race and 11th in the second race.  Michael is now up to 9th in the championship, just 4 points behind the 7th place rider.  Ewan Potter achieved a 13th place and 14th place scoring 5 points in total.

The competition moves on to Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire this weekend for round 4.  We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for more good results from Michael and Ewan.
